Rule: the day the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
The fourteenth day of the dark fortnight. In Nepal it is Kukur Tihar, when dogs, the guardians of Yama’s gate, are garlanded, given tika and fed. In India it is Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, remembering Krishna’s victory over Narakasura, with an oil bath before dawn; in Gujarat and Bengal it is Kali Chaudas.
Garlands and tika for every dog in Nepal, including the strays; an early oil bath and the first full lighting of lamps in India.
In the glossary: yama · krishna.
Sunday 8 November 2026. Ashvina Krishna Chaturdashi; the tithi runs Sat, 7 Nov, 4:19 pm to Sun, 8 Nov, 4:59 pm Sydney time.
Sunday 8 November 2026 in Kathmandu. Ashvina Krishna Chaturdashi; the tithi runs Sat, 7 Nov, 11:04 am to Sun, 8 Nov, 11:44 am Nepal time.
Saturday 7 November 2026 in New York (the same day across the US cities listed). US sunrises fall ten to fifteen hours behind Kathmandu's, so when the tithi ends in that gap the US keeps the festival a day earlier than Nepal.
Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day. In 2026 the cities split across Sat, 7 Nov and Sun, 8 Nov.
Sun and Moon positions from Meeus' algorithms with the Lahiri ayanamsa, amanta lunar months named by the solar ingress inside them, and the day on which the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Tithi boundaries are accurate to a few minutes; a boundary within minutes of sunrise is worth checking against your temple's panchang.
