Rule: the day the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Amanta Ashvina Krishna Trayodashi = purnimanta Kartika Krishna Trayodashi.
The thirteenth day of the dark fortnight before Diwali. In India, Dhanteras: the day of Dhanvantari, physician of the gods, and the day to buy metal, gold if one can, a utensil if not. In Nepal it is Kag Tihar, the first of the five days of Tihar (Yamapanchak), when the crows, Yama’s messengers, are fed before the family eats.
Food set out for the crows in the morning in Nepal; new metal and the first lamps in India.
In the glossary: yama · lakshmi.
Saturday 7 November 2026. Ashvina Krishna Trayodashi; the tithi runs Fri, 6 Nov, 4:02 pm to Sat, 7 Nov, 4:19 pm Sydney time.
Saturday 7 November 2026 in Kathmandu. Ashvina Krishna Trayodashi; the tithi runs Fri, 6 Nov, 10:47 am to Sat, 7 Nov, 11:04 am Nepal time.
Friday 6 November 2026 in New York (the same day across the US cities listed). US sunrises fall ten to fifteen hours behind Kathmandu's, so when the tithi ends in that gap the US keeps the festival a day earlier than Nepal.
Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day. In 2026 the cities split across Fri, 6 Nov and Sat, 7 Nov.
Sun and Moon positions from Meeus' algorithms with the Lahiri ayanamsa, amanta lunar months named by the solar ingress inside them, and the day on which the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Tithi boundaries are accurate to a few minutes; a boundary within minutes of sunrise is worth checking against your temple's panchang.
