Rule: the day the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi).

What the day observes

The first day of the bright fortnight of Ashvina: Navratri begins across India and Dashain, the longest festival of the Nepali year, begins in Nepal. A kalash (ghata) is established in the prayer room and barley is sown in a dish of sand, to grow into the jamara that elders will give with tika on the tenth day.

How it is kept

The sowing of the jamara at an auspicious hour, nine days of Durga worship, and the journey home that empties Kathmandu for a fortnight.

In the glossary: durga.

Common questions

When is Ghatasthapana 2027 in Sydney?

Friday 1 October 2027. Ashvina Shukla Pratipada; the tithi runs Thu, 30 Sept, 12:37 pm to Fri, 1 Oct, 10:07 am Sydney time. Kathmandu keeps it on Thursday 30 September 2027.

When is Ghatasthapana 2027 in Nepal?

Thursday 30 September 2027 in Kathmandu. Ashvina Shukla Pratipada; the tithi runs Thu, 30 Sept, 8:22 am to Fri, 1 Oct, 5:52 am Nepal time.

When is Ghatasthapana 2027 in the United States?

Thursday 30 September 2027 in New York (the same day across the US cities listed). US sunrises fall ten to fifteen hours behind Kathmandu's, so when the tithi ends in that gap the US keeps the festival a day earlier than Nepal.

Why is Ghatasthapana on a different day in different countries?

Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day. In 2027 the cities split across Thu, 30 Sept and Fri, 1 Oct.

How is the Ghatasthapana date calculated?

Sun and Moon positions from Meeus' algorithms with the Lahiri ayanamsa, amanta lunar months named by the solar ingress inside them, and the day on which the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Tithi boundaries are accurate to a few minutes; a boundary within minutes of sunrise is worth checking against your temple's panchang.
