Rule: the day the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
The first day of the bright fortnight of Ashvina: Navratri begins across India and Dashain, the longest festival of the Nepali year, begins in Nepal. A kalash (ghata) is established in the prayer room and barley is sown in a dish of sand, to grow into the jamara that elders will give with tika on the tenth day.
The sowing of the jamara at an auspicious hour, nine days of Durga worship, and the journey home that empties Kathmandu for a fortnight.
In the glossary: durga.
Sunday 11 October 2026. Ashvina Shukla Pratipada; the tithi runs Sun, 11 Oct, 2:51 am to Mon, 12 Oct, 3:02 am Sydney time.
Sunday 11 October 2026 in Kathmandu. Ashvina Shukla Pratipada; the tithi runs Sat, 10 Oct, 9:36 pm to Sun, 11 Oct, 9:47 pm Nepal time.
Sunday 11 October 2026 in New York (the same day across the US cities listed). US sunrises fall ten to fifteen hours behind Kathmandu's, so when the tithi ends in that gap the US keeps the festival a day earlier than Nepal.
Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi is current at local sunrise, and sunrises differ by up to a day's worth of hours between Sydney, Kathmandu and the US. In 2026 every calendar city keeps Ghatasthapana on the same day, Sunday 11 October 2026.
Sun and Moon positions from Meeus' algorithms with the Lahiri ayanamsa, amanta lunar months named by the solar ingress inside them, and the day on which the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Tithi boundaries are accurate to a few minutes; a boundary within minutes of sunrise is worth checking against your temple's panchang.
