Rule: the day the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi).
The birth of Ganesha on the fourth day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada, and the start of the ten days of Ganeshotsav in Maharashtra, where clay images are installed in homes and public pandals and carried to the water on Anant Chaturdashi.
Modak sweets, the installation of the image, daily arati, and the immersion at the end.
In the glossary: ganesha · puja.
Saturday 4 September 2027. Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi; the tithi runs Fri, 3 Sept, 6:50 pm to Sat, 4 Sept, 4:57 pm Sydney time.
Saturday 4 September 2027 in Kathmandu. Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi; the tithi runs Fri, 3 Sept, 2:35 pm to Sat, 4 Sept, 12:42 pm Nepal time.
Friday 3 September 2027 in New York (the same day across the US cities listed). US sunrises fall ten to fifteen hours behind Kathmandu's, so when the tithi ends in that gap the US keeps the festival a day earlier than Nepal.
Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day. In 2027 the cities split across Fri, 3 Sept and Sat, 4 Sept.
Sun and Moon positions from Meeus' algorithms with the Lahiri ayanamsa, amanta lunar months named by the solar ingress inside them, and the day on which the tithi is current at local sunrise (udaya tithi). Tithi boundaries are accurate to a few minutes; a boundary within minutes of sunrise is worth checking against your temple's panchang.
