The thirteenth day of the dark fortnight before Diwali. In India, Dhanteras: the day of Dhanvantari, physician of the gods, and the day to buy metal, gold if one can, a utensil if not. In Nepal it is Kag Tihar, the first of the five days of Tihar (Yamapanchak), when the crows, Yama’s messengers, are fed before the family eats.

Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day.
