Naam (ਨਾਮ) is the divine Name, the eternal vibration or creative sound through which God manifests and sustains all reality. In Sikhism, meditation on Naam—remembering God's presence and attributes—is the foundational spiritual practice that liberates the soul from ego and ignorance.
Naam derives from Sanskrit नाम (nāma) and Punjabi ਨਾਮ, meaning 'name.' In Sikh theology, it refers not merely to a label but to the sacred sound-vibration (Shabd) by which the Infinite expresses itself throughout creation.
Brahman / Shabda-Brahman — The ultimate reality expressed through primordial sound; direct parallel to Naam as the creative principle underlying all existence.
Dhikr / Divine Names (Asma) — Remembrance of God through invocation of His names and attributes; echoes the practice of Naam meditation as a path to union with the Divine.
Shem Ha-Meforash / Yah — The ineffable divine Name; shares the understanding that God's name is not a label but a living presence through which creation unfolds.
Mantra / Shabda — Sacred sound-formulas embodying divine power; Naam functions similarly as both invocation and vibrational reality of the Divine.
A seeker practises Naam by Simran—repeating divine names or Mool Mantar (the root composition) with the whole heart, aligning consciousness with God's presence. Over time, this turns from recitation into lived awareness: recognizing Naam in every breath, every heartbeat, every encounter, until the boundary between the meditator and the Name dissolves into constant remembrance.
What does Naam mean?
Naam means the divine Name—God's creative presence and power expressed as eternal sound. In Sikhism, it is not a mere label but the living reality through which God sustains and pervades all of existence.
Is Naam the same as God?
Not identical in the theological sense, yet inseparable in practice. Naam is how God is known and encountered; it is the divine attribute or presence accessible to the human soul. Meditating on Naam is meeting God directly.
How do I practise Naam?
Begin with Simran: repeat Waheguru (Wondrous Lord), Sat Nam (Truth is the Name), or passages from the Guru Granth Sahib with attention and devotion, letting the vibration align your consciousness with the Divine. Over time, Naam becomes your lived awareness.
