The festival of colours on the day after Holika Dahan, Fagu Purnima in Nepal. Colour, water and music in the streets, and the one day on which rank and distance are set aside. Kathmandu and the hills keep Fagu Purnima on the full-moon day itself; the Terai keeps it the following day, with India.

Because the day is decided by which civil day the tithi (lunar day) is current at local sunrise, or for this festival covers the evening. Sydney's sunrise is four to six hours ahead of Kathmandu's and New York's ten hours behind, so a tithi that ends between two sunrises gives a different day. In 2026 the cities split across Tue, 3 Mar and Wed, 4 Mar.
