Twelve lunar months are about 354 days, eleven short of the solar year, so roughly every 32–33 months an extra lunar month is inserted to keep festivals in their seasons. A lunar month (new moon to new moon) that contains no solar ingress (sankranti) is the extra one — the adhika month — and it takes the name of the month that follows it. Festivals are not kept in the adhika month; they fall in the following (nija) month.
By the month that follows: an extra month before Jyeshtha is Adhika Jyeshtha (or Purushottama masa / Mal masa). It is the same in amanta and purnimanta reckonings, though the boundaries of the surrounding named months differ by a fortnight.
The rare opposite: a lunar month containing two solar ingresses, so a month name is skipped. It happens only in years with two adhika months close together (about once in 19 to 141 years) and is listed in the table when it occurs.
