Published 23 October 2026 · Keshab Chapagain, founder and curator · One Source Sangha

The whole of 2027 on one page: the date each festival is kept in Nepal, in Australia and New Zealand, and in the United States. Most dates are the same everywhere; where the Americas or the west of Australia fall a day earlier, the table says so. Dashain Tika is Sunday 10 October 2027 in Nepal and Australia and Saturday 9 October in the USA; Lakshmi Puja is Friday 29 October in Nepal and Australia and Thursday 28 October in the USA; Chhath's evening arghya is Thursday 4 November.

"United States" means the Eastern and Central zones unless a bracket says otherwise; the Pacific cities (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle) are the ones that most often fall a day earlier. Australia's eastern cities, Adelaide and Darwin usually share a date; Perth sometimes joins Nepal's.

Why the date can differ between Kathmandu, Sydney and New York

A festival is kept on the civil day whose sunrise falls inside the governing tithi (lunar day), and sunrise comes at a different moment in each city. When a tithi ends in the small hours, Nepal and Australia can be on one date and the Americas on the one before. Every date below is computed for the city's own sunrise, with the Lahiri ayanamsa, by the same engine that runs our city festival calendars; temple and community dates occasionally differ by a day where a tradition follows a different rule, and the local temple's announcement should win.

The year in order

January. Maghe Sankranti opens the year on 14 January in Nepal and the USA, 15 January in most of Australia: the sun enters sidereal Capricorn, the days lengthen, and Nepali households eat til laddoo, ghee and yam. Tamils keep it as Pongal.

February and March. Saraswati Puja on 11/12 February, when children are given their first letters. Maha Shivaratri on the night of Saturday 6 March, kept with a vigil at Pashupatinath and in Shiva temples everywhere. Holika Dahan on the evening of 21 March (22nd in Australia) and Holi, the day of colours, on 22 March (23rd in Australia).

April and May. Wednesday 14 April is the first day of Bikram Sambat 2084, Nepali New Year, kept on the same day as Vaisakhi and the solar new year of Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi and Sinhala calendars. Ram Navami follows on the 14th or 15th. Buddha Purnima, the birth, awakening and passing of the Buddha, is 20 May.

July to September. Guru Purnima on 18 July. Janai Purnima and Raksha Bandhan on 16/17 August, Krishna Janmashtami on 24/25 August, Haritalika Teej on 2/3 September and Ganesh Chaturthi the day after.

Dashain. Ghatasthapana on 30 September (1 October in Australia), the barley sown and the nine nights of the goddess begun. Maha Ashtami on 7/8 October, Maha Navami on 8/9 October, and Vijaya Dashami, the day of tika and jamara, on Sunday 10 October in Nepal and Australia, Saturday 9 October in the USA. Tika continues until Kojagrat Purnima on 15 October. The day-by-day detail is in Dashain 2027 dates.

Tihar and Chhath. Kag Tihar on Wednesday 27 October, Kukur Tihar on the 28th, Gai Tihar and Lakshmi Puja on Friday 29 October (Thursday 28th in the USA), Mha Puja and the start of Nepal Sambat 1148 on the 30th, Bhai Tika on Sunday 31 October. Chhath's evening offering to the setting sun is Thursday 4 November, the dawn offering the next morning. Detail in Tihar, Diwali and Chhath 2027 dates. Kartika Purnima and Guru Nanak Jayanti close the season on 13/14 November.

Still to come in 2026

Before any of that: Tihar 2026 runs from Kag Tihar on Saturday 7 November to Bhai Tika on Wednesday 11 November, with Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November everywhere, and Chhath 2026 is Sunday 15 November. See Tihar 2026 in Australia and Tihar and Diwali 2026 in the USA.
