Anahata

Hinduism

Anahata is the heart chakra, the fourth primary energy centre in the Hindu subtle body (subtle anatomy), located at the heart. It is the seat of love, compassion, balance, and the bridge between the lower material chakras and the higher spiritual ones, traditionally associated with the element air and the colour green or gold.

Origin

Sanskrit अनाहत (anahata) means 'unstruck' or 'unbeaten'—from an- (not) and āhata (struck). The name points to the eternal, uncaused sound (anāhata-śabda or 'unstruck sound'), the inner divine vibration that resonates without any physical striking or causation, known in mystical practice as nāda.

The same truth, named in other traditions

Sufism

Qalb (القلب) — The spiritual heart (not the physical organ) as the seat of divine presence, witnessing, and the unveiling of truth through love and remembrance of God.

Christian Mysticism

The Sacred Heart — Christ's heart as the symbol of divine love, mercy, and the transformative meeting-point between human and divine—resonating with Anahata's role as a threshold of love.

Taoism

Zhong Gong (中宫) / Heart Centre — The energetic heart in the microcosmic orbit, understood as the fulcrum of vital force (qi) and emotional equilibrium, bridging heaven and earth.

Kabbalah

Tiferet (תפארת) — The heart of the Tree of Life, the centre of unified consciousness where the individual soul touches the divine unity, balancing opposites.

In practice

A seeker may cultivate Anahata through breath-centred meditation, resting awareness at the heart centre while honouring compassion and forgiveness toward self and others. Chanting the seed mantra YAM, visualizing green or gold light, or practising loving-kindness (mettā-like) meditation can awaken and harmonize this centre, opening access to intuitive wisdom, grief release, and the lived experience of interconnection.

Common questions

What does Anahata mean literally?

Anahata means 'unstruck' or 'unbeaten' in Sanskrit. It refers to the eternal, causeless sound or vibration that reverberates within the heart without any external striking—symbolizing the divine presence that exists independent of the material world.

Is Anahata the same as the physical heart?

No. Anahata is a centre in the subtle body (the energetic anatomy), not the physical organ. It is understood in Hindu tantra and yoga philosophy as a nexus of consciousness and prana (vital force) that governs love, emotion, and spiritual awakening.

Why is Anahata called the 'bridge' chakra?

Anahata bridges the lower three chakras (rooted in survival, sexuality, and power) with the upper three (throat, third eye, and crown), which are linked to higher consciousness. It transforms personal desire into universal love, making it the turning point toward enlightenment.
