Ajna is the sixth energy centre (chakra) in the subtle body of Hindu tantra and yoga, located at the midpoint between the eyebrows and associated with intuition, inner vision, and the seat of mind (manas). It is the gateway between the material and transcendent realms, traditionally called the 'command centre' where individual will aligns with divine will. When purified and activated, it is said to awaken direct perception beyond the senses and spontaneous knowing.
Ajna derives from Sanskrit ājñā, meaning 'command,' 'authority,' or 'decree.' The root relates to the verb ājñapayati (to command or order), reflecting the chakra's role as the governing intelligence that receives and transmits higher wisdom.
'Ayn al-qalb (the eye of the heart) — Both point to subtle perception beyond ordinary sight—an inner eye that witnesses divine reality. The Sufi insists this faculty is activated through love and surrender rather than technical practice alone.
Binah (Understanding) — Both represent intuitive knowing and the reception of higher intelligence; Binah as the supernal mother receiving the flash of Chokmah mirrors Ajna's role as receiver of higher command.
The nous (divine intellect) — The nous in Orthodox theology is the faculty by which the human spirit perceives and communes with the divine—parallel to Ajna's function as the seat of transcendent perception.
The 'Third Eye' or heavenly eye (tian yan) — Both traditions speak of an inner faculty located between the physical eyes that opens awareness to non-material dimensions and the flow of qi or subtle energy.
A contemporary seeker may work with Ajna through meditation on the light between the eyebrows (often visualising indigo or violet), chanting the seed mantra 'OM', or practising pranayama to steady the mind before gazing inward. Over time, this may soften the boundary between thought and direct knowing—moments when insight arrives not as reasoning but as immediate clarity, or when one senses the presence of another person or truth without sensory evidence. The fruit is not supernatural power but lucid clarity about one's own nature and the unity beneath apparent multiplicity.
What does Ajna mean and where is it located?
Ajna means 'command' in Sanskrit and refers to the sixth chakra situated in the energy body at the point between the eyebrows (the 'third eye'). It is not a physical organ but a nexus of subtle energy and consciousness in tantric anatomy.
Is Ajna the same as the 'third eye'?
Ajna is closely associated with the third eye concept, but the term 'third eye' is itself an English-language metaphor. Ajna is the precise Hindu-tantric designation for this centre of intuitive and transcendent perception.
What happens when Ajna 'opens'?
In Hindu tradition, when Ajna is activated or purified through sincere practice, one may experience heightened intuition, clarity of inner vision, spontaneous insight into one's true nature, and the sense of witnessing consciousness itself. Classical texts warn that without ethical foundation and a qualified teacher, opening Ajna without steadiness can lead to confusion or misuse of subtle powers.
